The Lamplighter

“Nonets” are short poems that have nine syllables in their first line and one fewer syllable in each descending line. They’re like the Polaroids of poetry.

Making rations of daylight hours
Fills the forge and forms a cinder.
It waits inside its lantern
Chamber, starving itself,
Until the old man
Leaves his room at
Dusk to feast
On the
Dark.

-B.W. Gladney
